As part of the Humanities and Sciences’ Conference, “Visions of War; the arts represent conflict”, on Saturday, October 24, 2009, The Film and Animation Department will screen a series of films addressing the spiritual, emotional, and psychological wounds of war from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the SVA Theater. Following the screenings a panel will discuss "The Scars of War: Healing Through the Arts" and will take questions from the audience. The panel will be moderated by screenwriter/playwright/Vietnam combat veteran David Berry who is a member of the SVA Film Department faculty. Panelists include film artists/combat veterans (screenwriters and directors), a psychologist with over three decades of experience treating Vietnam veterans, and a retired Army Colonel who has become a major spokesperson for those demanding official recognition and treatment of female victims of violence in the military.
Panelists include: Col. Ann Wright (ret.) (activist women soldier’s rights), Ari Folman (director ‘Waltz with Bashir’), . Edward Tick (author/psychologist ‘War and the Soul’), Brian Delate (actor/filmmaker/Veteran ‘A Soldier’s Heart’)
And, Mr. Oliver Stone (schedule pending).

“Who Decides About War” will be a national conference confronting essential questions raised by the U.S. invasions and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. These questions are timely, as the political process that brought the United States into those wars is widely recognized today as having been flawed at best, dishonest at worst.
This engaging event will bring together activists and academics, public officials and veterans, lawyers and military families to accomplish two goals. First, to educate ourselves and each other about the issues involved, the state of the law, and alternatives. Second, to develop a statement of common principles leading to a more democratic, comprehensive, and durable national defense policy — one that will honor the Constitution and help keep the United States from entering into unnecessary wars.
