We will be airing Winter Soldier Hearings: Iraq and Afghanistan brought to us by Veterans for Peace. Join us a group of students from Human Relations 491/492, taught by Human Relations professor Julie Andrzejewski in showing support for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans by attending our re-broadcast of their testimonies. As Vietnam Veterans did in 1971 another group of courageous soldiers will speak out about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their accounts will give an accurate picture of daily life as a soldier in country. Let’s support our veterans by listening to them and what they have experienced while serving in the United States Military.
This event will be held at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia by GMU Students for a Democratic Society in support of Winter Soldier. We will show the recorded testimonies from the Winter Soldier program.

Winter Soldier Hearings to be Screened at Peace Action Center
In the largest gathering of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) to date, hundreds of IVAW members will gather near Washington, DC on March 13-16 for public testimony about their experiences during the Iraq and Afghanistan occupations, sharing eyewitness reports that have often been ignored by the media. They will tell the nation the real story of this war.
IVAW says: "Winter soldiers, according to the patriot Thomas Paine, are those who stand up for the soul of their country in its darkest hours. In 1971, a group of courageous Vietnam War veterans held the first Winter Soldier hearing, during which they presented public testimony to expose the criminal nature of the war. Now, over 35 years later, another Winter Soldier is needed."
Peace Action Wisconsin will provide live viewing of most of the hearings via the Internet at the Peace Action Center, 1001 E. Keefe Ave., Milwaukee. Veterans To Commemorate Detroit Winter Soldier Hearings
Members of Veterans For Peace and the Vietnam Veterans Against the War will commemorate the 1971 Winter Soldier hearings on Saturday, March 15th at 2pm at the original hearing site, 2921 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit. The Detroit commemoration is being held at the same time Iraq veterans are holding their own Winter Soldier hearings in Washington, DC.
The "Winter Soldier Investigation" was a gathering sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW – www.vvaw.org) intended to publicize war crimes and atrocities by the United States Armed Forces and their allies in the Vietnam War. The VVAW challenged the morality and conduct of the war by showing the direct relationship between military policies and war crimes in Vietnam. The three-day gathering of 109 veterans and 16 civilians took place in Detroit from January 31-February 2, 1971. Discharged servicemen from each branch of military service, as well as civilian contractors, medical personnel and academics, all gave testimony about war crimes they had committed or witnessed during the years of 1963-1970. ... The original Winter Soldier hearings were held at the Howard Johnson’s New Center, which was torn down in the late 1990's. The commemoration event in Detroit on March15th will be at the site of the Howard Johnson’s hotel, on the corner of West Grand Boulevard and 3rd Street, which is now a parking lot. The event will consist of veterans reading the names of the first 100 soldiers killed in both the Vietnam and present Iraq war, along with statements by veterans about the parallels between Iraq and Vietnam. The public is invited. For more information, contact Bob Krzewinski at [email protected] or call 734-487-9058. The event is being sponsored by Veterans For Peace – Michigan.

Over 170 Pairs of Combat Boots representing the U.S. Soldiers from Florida who have fallen in the Iraq War and 200 pair of shoes representing the Iraqi Civilian Casualties to be memorialized.
Satellite Beach, Florida ? The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in cooperation with local peace activists will honor fallen U.S. military personnel and Iraqi civilians with its traveling exhibition: Eyes Wide Open: The Cost of War to Florida, which will be on display at The Satellite Beach Civic Center on March 15, 2008.
AFSC, an international social justice organization, created Eyes Wide Open: The Human Cost of War to illustrate the lives lost in the war in Iraq. It first opened in Chicago's Federal Plaza with just over 500 pairs of boots in January 2004. The national exhibit was last displayed on Memorial Day weekend 2007 with over 3,400 pairs of boots. This was the last time that the entire death toll was represented in one location. Since then the exhibition has been divided into state displays and traveled throughout the nation to smaller cities and towns. All the state exhibits combined now include more than 3963 pairs of combat boots representing U.S. military casualties, along with a memorial to the tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians who have been killed in the conflict.
This will be Florida's first State Casualty Exhibit. The exhibit will be a site of quiet reflection and thought. It will not be a protest or demonstration. Our hope is that the simplicity of the exhibit will honor those who have given their lives, and make the true costs of this war more real to Americans for whom the war is so far away. We invite you to join us in the spirit of this solemn occasion. Let us make March 15th a day of reflection and spiritual transformation that honors those who have died and renews our commitment to create a more peaceful world.
The American Friends Service Committee http://www.afsc.org/ is a Quaker organization that includes people of various faiths who are committed to social justice, peace and humanitarian service. Its work is based on the belief in the worth of every person and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice.

In February 1971, one month after the revelations of the My Lai massacre, an astonishing public inquiry into war crimes committed by American forces in Vietnam was held at a Howard Johnson motel in Detroit. The Vietnam Veterans Against the War organized this event called the Winter Soldier Investigation. More than 125 veterans spoke of atrocities they had witnessed and committed.
Though the event was attended by press and television news crews, almost nothing was reported to the American public. Yet, this unprecedented forum marked a turning point in the anti-war movement. It was a pivotal moment in the lives of young vets from around the country who participated, including the young John Kerry. The Winter Soldier Investigation changed him and his comrades forever. Their courage in testifying, their desire to prevent further atrocities and to regain their own humanity, provide a dramatic intensity that makes seeing Winter Soldier an unforgettable experience.
Come listen to Trey Kindlinger, member of Ft. Meade chapter of Iraq Veterans against the War and Veterans for Peace speak to student at the University of Maryland about the historic significance of the 1971 Winter Soldier hearings on the heals of the 2008 investigations in Silver Spring, Maryland.

YOU ARE NOT MY ENEMY: Closing Reception, Warrior Writers Book Release, Poetry, Music and IVAW Fundraiser
This will be the last chance to see Aaron Hughes's show titled SHIFTING MEMORIES: Reconstructing an identity amidst the dust of false understandings, deceiving narratives, and "Iraq." Aaron Hughes shares a series of projects that bring to the forefront the over-complex personal realities of the war in Iraq. The projects convey a series of metaphors, critiques, and ambiguous narratives in order to deconstruct the nostalgic war epic that informs much of how mass media interprets war.
Warrior Writers Book Release: This will be the first chance to pick up the new Warrior Writers book. The Warrior Writers Project is a dynamic, organic journey that provides tools and space for community building, healing and redefinition for Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW). Through writing/artistic workshops that are based on experiences in the military and Iraq, IVAW members unbury experiences and connect with each other on a personal and artistic level. The writing from the workshops is compiled into books, performances and exhibits that provide a lens into the hearts of people who have a deep and intimate relationship with the Iraq war.
Poetry and Music: Veterans will be reading their work from the new Warrior Writers book, sharing new poems, and enjoying music by Jason Moon. It is a rupture in our everyday when a veteran finds a creative way to abstractly share of their experiences in war.
IVAW Fundraiser: Art works will be auctioned off, and donations will be accepted for drinks. So come out and support the Iraq veterans who are breaking through the disconnect and silence by speaking out and sharing there experiences. VETERANS NEED YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO HAVE A VOICE!!!
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!!!
THIS WILL BE A FUN, CHALLENGING, AND INFORMATIVE ALL AGES EVENT.

This event is monumental and historic, but is in desperate need of funding.
Please be part of a better and more peaceful future by coming to this party.
We will provide the alcohol and all donations will go directly to IVAW and Winter Soldier.
$7 suggested donation at the door.
Please come and please bring your friends!

ATTENTION SOLDIERS !
This message is for you. Beginning on 13th March thru March 16th 2008, Veterans and Soldiers will testify at the “Winter Soldier” investigation to be held in Washington DC. The first “Winter Soldier” investigation was held in 1971. Those hearings provided irrefutable proof as to the criminal nature of America`s war against the Peoples of Southeast Asia. Today there are literally hundreds of thousands of soldiers from the US Military & NATO based here in Europe. Some of you have already been to Afghanistan and/or Iraq. Some of you are being ordered there for the first time and you need to know the truth about the illegal bloody occupation duty you will soon face. Others of you will take part in secret wars being waged in Africa, Europe, Central and South America, the Middle East and Asia.
We call on all soldiers to support the Hearings. Spread the word! Speak Out! Testify! The Hearings will be streamed live over the Internet.
